A Thumb Nail of what was involved in Translating the Handke Plays

  • Elmo Daffington Jr. Your argument implies that simple English
    constructions,
limited local detail, and the absence of wordplay -- in short that
which makes for ease of translation -- also makes fiction "great"
(your term above). A dubious standard. On the other hand,
Nabokov was able to translate Lolita into Russian.

  • Thomas McGonigle I have been told the problem with VN's
Russian version is that he made it into an antique...something
it is not in English.. The exper ience of ADA is probably what it
    reads like...

some are straight translations and don't need to be
more than that since MY FOOT MY TUTOR is a score...
QUODLIBET is me who knows about auditory hallucinaton
and his FINNEGANS WAKE
RIDE is a straight translation but that the dialogue
obviously accmodates itself to NY 1970, ditto for DYING
CRYING [not happy with that at all] didn't take enough of
 the QUODLIBET tack there!
PROPHECY is pretty straight but I am willing to be playful when the author is.
i think that's it in one of shorter nutshells! xx m.r

Tom, here is all of it, with feeling:

....some are straight translations and don't need to

be more than that e.g. MY FOOT MY TUTOR is a score..

.For PUBLIC INSULT as I now call OFFENDING THE AUDIENCE

[the American fear of abuse - oh pleas abuse me Osama

bin Laden - and its connotations prohibited what would

have been perfect!]
I needed to entirely re-invent the insult chords at

the end and did precisely the same kind of list making,

it turned out, as Handke
QUODLIBET is me who knows about auditory hallucinaton and his FINNEGANS WAKE
RIDE is a straight translation but that the dialogue

obviously accommodates itself to NY 1970, ditto for

DYING where the stage version is better after working

on it with Carl Weber...
CRYING [not happy with that at all] didn't take enough

of the QUODLIBET tack there! SELF ACCUSATION again see:
http://www.handketrans.scriptmania.com/index.html
PROPHECY is pretty straight but I am willing to be

playful when the author is.
i think that's it in one short nutshell!
As to WALK ABOUT THE VILLAGES ...occasion to be

grateful that my nutty stepfather, Colonel Richard

Weber, was also a Shakespeare one, riding in a Crosly

[its the one that looks like a Fridge on wheels!
http://tinyurl.com/64fce4f
through the  Prospect Park development in West Orange

with Dick shouting one of he many monologues by heart

and tongue - "to be or not to be" in the most precarious

position and vehicles imaginable - will sure get

Shakespeare into your guts, and if it had not been

for that early absorbtion I might have called

DAS MUENDEL WILL VORMUND SEIN .. "The servant wants

to be the Master" or something equally boring...

instead of MY FOUTRE MY TUTOR. However, although

Handke said it was a better translation than he

could have ever imagined it came a cropper at Michael

diCapua, a little ice-pick-asslicker who had advanced

to editor in chief at Farrar, Straus and who especially

objected to Handke's formulation of sexual heat.
Part of the long detailed Afterword are on-line at

the Translation site..
. The Innerworld translations are very straight

and so is Nonsense & Happiness. Innerworld I

then added some later that were only published in

magazines... The New Yorker, Howard Moss was hospitable...

pretty challenging to get some of them as right as I

could at the time...with KASPAR I initially got even

wilder than Handke in mocking rhyme and rhthm and didnt

rein it in until Peter Brook asked me to..
If anyone is interested what the experience of translating the early plays entailed, I have given a detailed account of it at:
