A FIRST BRIEF TAKE ON TOM LUTZ'S L.A. REVIEW OF BOOKS

The L.A. Review of Books is tetchy, they write me that they will never publish a single letter from me, Tom Lutz does, this for the following, specific as compared to the more general, critique of mine:

It is apparent from David Shields ramble that there is someone although he teaches writing has no sense of a writers b r e a t h i n g, or rhythm, or of deep syntax, or the rejuvination effected through estrangement, say Handke's ABSENCE which puts you into the state of being experiencing a film, and which has the loudest tank in the world --, or the magicking that can be achieved by making a reader experience the world anew through words... alas, there is someone who will go chasing from one Magruder film after another. No wonder David, as he wrote me several times, is not interested in any of the many things that Handke's work has availed his readers. Or a more materilistic use of language.

 Domage, "sing sorrow"  David is stuck in the whirligig of his brain.

as though Mexican literature were not next door

not to speak of the literature of the many

language ghettos that I came to know during

my eight years in that region

FARSI, KOREAN, CHINESE, PASHTUN, JAPANESE,

ARABIC, etc. etc.

and by the persistent interest

in suchwell-shelled nuts as Marylin Monroe, the Mitford, Keith Richard, and I could go atconsiderable length... and in having its say on matters that have been raked to death...

and so far I havent come one a single new voice

The Innerworld translations are very straight and so is Nonsense & Happiness. Innerworld I then added some later that were only published in magazines... The New Yorker, Howard Moss was hospitable... pretty challenging to get some of them as right as I could at the time...with KASPAR I initially got even wilder than Handke in mocking rhyme and rhthm and didnt rein it in until Peter Brook asked me to..
